My latest website project has been to develop a Shopify website for Haring Center’s Professional Development Unit (PDU).
Haring Center’s PDU offers professional development opportunities including workshops, live and recorded webinars. As part of the University of Washington, we use Bridge, a Learning Management System (LMS) by Instructure, to present our courses. This new Shopify site allows our customers to be able to purchase our courses and link to the course materials on Bridge.
My task was to create the Shopify site, style it with Haring Center’s brand and modify the theme to market our courses. While I’ve worked with many CMS platforms to create websites, this project presented some new challenges — for me and for the University of Washington’s IT department.
The university is piloting Bridge but this is the first time they’ve tried to enable users to purchase courses through a Shopify ecommerce website. On the Bridge side, the UW’s IT group worked with Instructure to create a portal for the PDU’s courses to link to our Shopify site.
Because Bridge and Shopify are separate systems, only a limited amount of information gets passed between the 2 different systems. This meant that we did a lot of user testing to ensure that the sites worked together and effectively marketed our courses — often creating work-arounds for features that weren’t supported by both platforms. In the end, we’ve created a system that is user friendly and our audience is able to purchase the courses that they want to take through our new Shopify site.

Haring Center’s Project DATA website was developed as part of a marketing campaign to promote Project DATA and the publication of The DATA Manual for Teaching Preschoolers with Autism.
Project DATA is a groundbreaking, replicable, sustainable, inclusive classroom model for young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Created by Haring Center educators, researchers, and graduate students, this program has been used by school districts throughout the state of Washington and the and the rest of the United States.
During the month leading up to the publication of the manual, our Communications team created this website, research posters, flyers, along with email and social media to promote Project DATA.
I used WordPress to create this responsively designed and accessible site. The site features an overview video, information on ASD and the research behind Project DATA, with links to order the new manual.

As part of my work on the iBESTT app at the University of Washington, I create illustrations and graphics for use in the app’s training videos.
The iBESTT app is designed to help school teams working with students by training teachers to identify and modify problem behaviors. Because it can be difficult to film children exhibiting problem behaviors in a realistic manner that protects their privacy, we decided to use illustrations to demonstrate problem behaviors.
The process I use to create these images starts out with a rough sketch showing what the various characters are supposed to be doing in the video. Then I create the images using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. The final images are added to the training videos by our videographer.
These sample images are taken from the iBESTT videos and show teachers and coaches working together with children to improve behavior problems in a school setting.
